School in India

The purpose of this project is to function as an educational and community center for a small village in the Gugarat region of India. The design is constructed out of indigenous materials and recycled materials. It consists of six classroom pavilions, a canteen, and a resource center. The buildings face towards the prevailing winds, allowing them to naturally ventilate. The classroom pavilions are constructed of rammed earth. The earth walls are then covered with tar. The tar both waterproofs the walls and allows them to take in more heat. Due to the time lag that rammed earth has when releasing heat, the classrooms will stay warm when the nights get cold. The canteen and resource center are also rammed earth construction, however, they rely on a different system to stay warm in the night. The canteen and resource center use trombe walls. Instead of glazed glass or fiber glass, which is commonly used in modern trombe walls, these systems can utilize clear glass or plastic bottles. While the material might have shifted, the trombe walls still work in the same manner. All of the buildings are equiped with canopies to allow the students to have classes outdoors as well and shelter them from the sun during recess.
